pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of the pond water. The ideal pH is between 7.0 (neutral) and pH8.0 (slightly alkaline) but pH 6.5-8.5 is acceptable.

Alkaline pond water (pH 7.0 - 14) can typically be caused by:

• Using cement around the pond that drops into the water,
• Calcium rich rock or paving slabs around the edge of your pond or on watercourses,
• Use of unsealed bricks or slabs in the water for supporting pumps and fountains or creating hides,
