We sell many different types of livestock at J&K Aquatics, but out of all the aquatic species we stock, which were the most popular throughout 2023?

Here are our top 10:

10: Sucking Loach (TI009)  

These hardy little creatures are especially useful algae grazers. They can be kept in almost any tropical community aquarium over 54L. Don’t be afraid to put these in cichlid aquariums either, they are strong and will not be bullied. 

Price: £0.75 each, £0.65 per 25, £0.60 per 50.   

9: Angelfish (TG007) 

One of the most recognisable tropical species. The Angelfish come in lots of assorted colours and patterns and grow no more than 15cm long. They are best kept in aquariums over 80cm long and can safely live with medium and larger peaceful community fish. 

Price: £1.80 each, £1.70 per 10, £1.60 per 20  

8: Zebra Danio (TD001)  

Zebra Danio, (or Zebra Fish as they are sometimes known) are very hardy and fast swimming fish. An excellent choice for beginners, they grow to only 6cm and are suitable for most tropical aquariums.  

Price: £0.50 each, £0.45 per 30, £0.40 per 50.  

7: Cardinal Tetra (TP008) 

Sometimes confused with the Neon Tetra, these striking red and blue fish look amazing when kept in large groups. They will live happily with most other community fish, grow to only 5cm in length, and should be kept in aquariums of at least 54L. 

Price: £0.90 each, £0.85 per 25, £0.80 per 50, £0.75 per 100.  

6: Corydoras Catfish (TC001 TC002 TC003) 

Growing to only 7cm in length, our most popular and the friendliest bottom-feeding fish, the Corydoras (Cory) Catfish are busy little creatures. They are always scavenging and rooting around the bottom of the aquarium and never seem to rest. Cory’s come in many different colours and patterns, but the best-sellers are the bronze, albino, and peppered species.

5: Mollies (TL062)  

The ‘common’ Mollies are a very hardy and popular fish. They are available in a mix of distinct colours: black, silver, marble etc. And will grow to about 6cm. A highly active fish, and a particularly excellent choice for beginners. 

Price: £0.75 each, £0.70 per 25, £0.65 per 50.  

4: Platies (TL508) 

Platies are an interesting, live-bearing fish that are easy to keep and breed. They are available in a vast range of assorted colours, can be kept with almost all community fish and grow to only 6cm in length.

3: Goldfish 5-7cm (C002)  

Most people start in the hobby with an old favourite, the Goldfish. These are easy to keep and can be kept in almost any pond or cold-water aquarium (the bigger – the better) with a filter.

2: Guppies (TL600 & TL601) 


One of the most well-known tropical fish. These fish are immensely popular with both novice and expert aquarists alike.

Mixed Female Guppy 3-3.5cm

Price: £0.60 each, £0.55 per 50, £0.50 per 100.  

1: Neon Tetra TP001 

The most popular tropical fish of all, the blue Neon Tetra. These grow to approx. 4cm in length and are suitable for most tropical aquariums of 54L or more. It's best to keep them in groups of at least 5, but preferably more. 

Price: £0.50 each, £0.45 per 50, £0.40 per 100.  

As a rule, when selecting tropical fish, and despite their known diet, if a fish can fit into another fish’s mouth there is a good chance that it could end up there at some point. It is not always the case, but it is worth bearing in mind when selecting fish and advising consumers.
